Curriculum Impact at Smallthorne Primary Academy

At Smallthorne, our Character and Arts Curriculum is designed to develop the whole child — academically, emotionally, socially, and culturally. We believe that education should not only secure strong outcomes in English, maths, and across the wider curriculum, but also nurture curiosity, resilience, creativity, and a love of learning.

What makes our curriculum unique?

A vision-driven approach, grounded in the principles of the EYFS, where every child is seen as unique.

A curriculum built on the National Curriculum, ensuring children are equipped with the knowledge and skills for their next stage.

A focus on positive relationships, an enabling environment, and personalised learning and development.

A balance between academic mastery and the development of character, well-being, and cultural awareness.

Measuring Impact

We know our curriculum is effective when:

Children show engagement, enjoyment, and curiosity in their learning.

Books and resources demonstrate progress and adaptation to individual needs.

Pupils achieve strong outcomes in core subjects, supported by high-quality teaching sequences.

Staff deliver lessons with confidence, supported by purposeful training and collaboration.

Feedback from children, staff, and families highlights the positive effect of our curriculum on both learning and well-being.

Our Reading Approach

Reading is at the heart of our curriculum. We ensure children:

Access structured, phonics-aligned reading scheme books to build decoding skills and fluency.

Enjoy a wide range of books for pleasure, developing motivation, vocabulary, and comprehension.

Take part in guided, independent, and one-to-one reading, with carefully planned activities that strengthen skills and confidence.

Long-Term Impact

Through our Character and Arts Curriculum, children leave Smallthorne with:

Secure academic foundations across subjects.

A love of reading and learning.

The confidence, creativity, and resilience to embrace future challenges.

The values and skills to make a positive contribution to their community and the wider world.
