Smallthorne Primary Academy

Smallthorne Primary Academy is committed to promoting equality, diversity and inclusion for all pupils, staff and members of the wider community. We recognise our duties under the Equality Act 2010 and the Public Sector Equality Duty, which requires schools to:

  • eliminate unlawful discrimination, harassment and victimisation
  • advance equality of opportunity between people who share a protected characteristic and those who do not
  • foster good relations between different groups of people

These duties apply to the following protected characteristics:

  • age
  • disability
  • gender reassignment
  • marriage and civil partnership
  • pregnancy and maternity
  • race
  • religion or belief
  • sex
  • sexual orientation

At Smallthorne Primary Academy we actively promote equality through our inclusive curriculum, high expectations for all pupils, strong pastoral support and our Character and Arts curriculum, ensuring every child feels safe, valued and able to achieve their potential.

Our equality objectives support our wider work to ensure that all pupils, including those who are disadvantaged, have special educational needs or disabilities, or come from different cultural or linguistic backgrounds, can fully participate in school life.

These objectives are reviewed regularly and formally updated at least every four years.

Equality Objectives (2024–2028)

Objective 1 – Equality of Achievement

Ensure that all pupils achieve well from their starting points by carefully monitoring attainment and progress for key groups, including disadvantaged pupils and pupils with SEND, and taking timely action to address any emerging gaps.

Leaders will:

  • analyse pupil progress data regularly
  • identify and address any inequalities in attainment
  • ensure support and interventions enable pupils to access the full curriculum.

Objective 2 – Inclusive Participation

Ensure that all pupils can fully access the wider life of the school, including trips, clubs, leadership opportunities and enrichment activities.

Leaders will:

  • monitor participation across groups of pupils
  • remove any barriers to access
  • provide additional support where needed so all pupils can take part in school experiences.

Objective 3 – Respect and Positive Relationships

Promote a culture of respect and understanding where differences are valued and all members of the school community feel safe and included.

Leaders will:

  • teach equality, diversity and British values through the curriculum
  • address any prejudice-based language or behaviour quickly and effectively
  • provide opportunities for pupils to learn about different cultures, beliefs and communities.

Objective 4 – Inclusive Learning Environment

Ensure that pupils with disabilities or additional needs are able to access all aspects of school life through appropriate adaptations, resources and support.

Leaders will:

  • make reasonable adjustments where needed
  • ensure classrooms and learning materials are accessible
  • provide staff training to support inclusive teaching.

Monitoring and Review

The impact of these objectives is monitored through:

  • pupil progress and attainment data
  • behaviour and safeguarding records
  • participation in enrichment opportunities
  • pupil voice and parent feedback
  • governor oversight

The governing body and school leaders review equality objectives regularly to ensure that Smallthorne Primary Academy continues to provide an inclusive, supportive ad ambitious environment for every child.

b. The Trust is committed to equality in its delivery of education, whether or not the service is directly provided by us or contracted out to a third-party provider.

c. The Trust aims to provide high quality education services, making sure that services are easily accessible. We will continue to improve by consulting with staff, students, parents and governors, their communities and external organisations.

Where necessary we will implement reasonable adjustments, or additional support, to ensure equality of access to an education and suitable working environment.

e. Our staff and governors who agree and deliver our education provision will recognise diversity and demonstrate a proactive approach in their day-to-day work. They will ensure that everyone is treated fairly, recognising special needs and understanding differences. Behaviour will reach our high standards of conduct (Staff and students) and the learning environment we provide will be safe and accessible for those studying and working.

f. The Trust will adhere to statutory government legislation and give consideration to other relevant guidance, which aim to make sure that everyone is treated with equality.
